Remote assistance under Linux

Hi all

Im running linux mint here and im looking to set up remote assistance so I can connect from linux to windows based machines. I know in windows there are programs such as teamviewer for a windows to windows conenction which work well for that particular environment, is there such software for linux which will allow a cross platform connection.

There is a free version that should be compatible with linux.

We use RealVNC at work (not for cross platforms though) and will warn you it is slow to use. Maybe it is just our network though. Just thought I would warn you...

I'll take a look later, just had another thought too for a workaround if I cant VNC going, I could possibly set up a VM to run XP and then run teamview from within, just unsure on what speed would be like though!

Well ive done a bit of a distro hop here and I am now running Mandriva and to be honest I like im liking it better than mint. Ive installed a VM using Virtualbox and setup Windows 7 and installed teamviewer and all works perfect from a virtual world! Speed is looking good too. One of the things I was worried about.

Thanks for the input guys. I will also be trying RealVNC out at a later date too as per your suggestions to see how it goes.

I have yet to try Mandriva but have heard great things about it. I might have to install it on a vm and give it a try. Which type of environment did you choose? Gnome, KDE, something else?

Im using KDE at the mo, I have in the past enjoyed KDE but was put off for a while when KDE4.0 arrived as I simply did not like it (due to personal preferences). Im slowly warming back to KDE again as I do like the configurability of KDE better then gnome. There is also an alpha 3 version for Mandy out at the mo that you can play with if you wish to, I plugged for the stable One edition

The RPM on Mandriva runs no problem

Its seems fine Ben, no noticable lag. Just connected to a computer situated about 4/5 miles away without any problem.

One thing I have not tried though is a Linux to Linux via teamview but then again I don't know anyone else that runs Linux that I can connect to

Works great from both my linux box to my windows and also the other way around. It is a keeper.
I like the option to create a permanent password so I could remote into any of my home computers from work.

I know you can create a partner list which I have done in windows for connecting to my dads computer but I cannot remember offhand if a fresh password is needed each time or not.

By default it appears TeamViewer creates a new 4 digit password each time it is started but you can create a permanent password to use so as long as you know your ID which does not change and you have the program running you can log on without anyone one the other end giving you the password. I think it is pretty slick myself.

That is good about being able to set the password to the ID. Thanks for that info, it will be handy for keeping an eye on other family members computers!
