ftp server

i dont know anything about ftp/joomla(or w/e) and php stuff. a friend said he was gonna host an ftp server for me and i want to know exactly what one is and how it relates. he sent me an example of what he was talking about and it looked like something ive been wanting to get a long time ago.
what is a good trustworthy preferably free site for this? ive googled em and i dont know whom to trust and how safe they are. will my regular setting on eset suffice for security or must i tighten up my security?

What's the purpose of this FTP server? Just to share files - or create a website?
The free hosts are often "questionable" - and very slow...

Server hosting is pretty cheap, a few dollars/month. And you'll get a server "control panel", no need for FTP.

Examples of good hosts are InMotion and Bluehost. You'll have to buy a domain as well - it's about $10/year.
