Moving files to another hard drive

I'm still learning how to make use of my second hard drive and thought I would move some of my bigger files to the other drive to clear some space on my main one. I created a new partition on the second drive and research so far tells me its as simple as drag and drop into the partition.

Tried opening the partition in disk management and dragging an avi file into the partition but instead of moving it, it made a copy. I though maybe that wouldn't be a problem as I could just delete the original from my main drive but apparently not.

When I try to delete the original I get a message saying it can't be deleted as its in use by another program. I presume thats because of the copy that exists on the other drive but Im sure I'm missing a point somewhere.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong ?

You should cut > paste in explorer, not in disk management (don't even think it's possible in disk management).

To get rid of "in use by another program" you need to log off, then log on again.

Thanks, I'll do that in future but it does work by opening the partition in disk management, I just tried it with cut/paste.

When dragging your files across, try pressing the 'Shift' key while dragging, it should move the files rather than copying 'em - At least, it does in Win-Explorer, I dunno 'bout Disk-Management

Thanks Bo. Drag n drop....cut/paste....all the same really. We'll all take a chance at being lazy if we think we can though, won't we ?

When I started with computers, it seems like everyone else had been doing it for 20 years.....so I was that eager to learn, I skipped a lot of the basics. Makes me look like I haven't got a clue sometimes but so what ? We all get there in the end and If people like me didn't keep asking Nicholas such stupid questions, he would soon get bored.
