The Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool in Vista will test the memory (RAM) and report any errors found.
There are three ways to run the tool.
1. From the Vista Desktop
2. From the Boot Manager Menu
3. From the Vista DVD
1 From the Vista Desktop
Click the Start Orb/Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Admin Tools/Memory Diagnostics Tool
Choose whether to restart immediately or later.

When Vista reboots the tool will open
Press ESC to exit.

The computer will reboot automatically when the tests have finished.
If a fault is found a message will be displayed at the next logon.
If no faults are found the message below will be displayed from the system tray at the next logon.

2. From the Boot Manager Menu
Reboot then tap F8 repeatedly to reach the Advanced Boot Options screen.

Press ESC to reach the Boot Manager screen below
Windows Memory Diagnostic is at the bottom of the window.
Press Tab to highlight Windows Memory Diagnostic
Press Enter to start the diagnostics.

3. From the DVD
Configure your PC to boot from DVD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the DVD.
Set the boot order to
Floppy (if present)
CD/DVDROM
Hard Disk
SAVE and EXIT
Reboot your PC with the Vista DVD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from DVD..." prompt, do so.
Loading files might take some time

The installation will load

Select language, time and keyboard
Click “Next”

Click “Repair Your Computer”. Do NOT click the “Install Now” button.

Select the operating system you wish to repair
Click “Next”

Click “Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool”

Finally, select whether to restart now or for the tool to run at next restart.
