A Repair of XP
Will not format the hard drive.
Will not remove a virus or malware
Will not lose any personal data or files
Will remove any Service Packs (if not on XP installation CD), any subsequent Windows Updates and unsigned drivers, all of which will need to be re-installed afterwards.
Stay offline to do a repair and do not go online again without a firewall enabled. After repairing XP, immediately install Service Packs (if necessary), firewall and then all Critical Updates.
PLEASE NOTE
Internet Explorer7 must be uninstalled before running a Repair of XP.
A Repair will remove Internet Explorer7 and will not reinstate Internet Explorer6
How to uninstall Internet Explorer7
1.Close Internet Explorer and any open windows
2.Click on Start, then click Control Panel
3.Double-click on Add/Remove Programs
4.Find Internet Explorer 7
5.Click the “Remove” button and let the uninstall run.
6.Internet Explorer6 will be restored
7.Run the Repair of XP
How to Repair XP
Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.
Set the boot order to
Floppy (if present)
CDROM
Hard Disk
SAVE and EXIT
Reboot your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

Press F6 at this screen if you need to install any third-party or RAID drivers
Then copying files can take quite a while.

Do NOT press “R” here. This is not the option to “Repair” XP
Press ENTER here

This is the Windows XP Licensing Agreement ( EULA).
Press F8 to accept the agreement

All Windows installations will be listed here.
If you have more than one installation, use the arrow keys to select the installation to be repaired
When the selection has been made, press the R key to start the repair
If the “R” for repair option is missing, quit setup and seek help, otherwise a reinstall of XP may take place and all personal files will be lost.

The repair will then run automatically.
You may be asked to enter the Product Key for your XP installation.
This can be found on a sticker on the computer case. It is on the bottom of laptops and is similar to this
