Some time ago, I killed my 250Gb IDE drive by accidentally setting it as a 'Dynamic' drive which went wrong, somehow. The BIOS detects it as a 0Mb drive. Using it as a 2nd drive and booting from a SATA drive caused the PC to hang, immediately past the POST screen.
I obtained the 'Parted Magic 3' CD and booted from that, PM3 sees the drive as a 250Mb drive, with all the files still present, so, using 'TestDisk', I tried rebuilding the MBR and Partition Table (according to their online instructions). Now, when I boot the PC, immediately past the POST screen, I get the message:
If you want to run Parted Magic from a USB stick - I have "borrowed" and modified some files to make it easier to create a bootable PM USB.
Easy USB Parted Magic: FILE DELETED BY POSTER
Extract "Parted Magic.zip" - a folder named "Parted Magic" with some files inside will be created. Download and unzip pmagic-4.1.iso.zip in that folder. Connect your USB pin, run PM_USB (in the folder on your HDD) and follow the instructions on screen.
Then I'd like you to check the boot sector with TestDisk.
Checking the HDD's boot sector:
A. At the first window, select “No Log” and press the <Enter> key.
B. Select which drive to analyse, choose “Proceed” and <Enter>.
C. Select partition type – Intel if it’s a PC then <Enter>.
D. Choose Advanced > press <Enter>.
E. Choose Boot > press <Enter>.
F. New window - see below.
Please take a screenshot of the last window above. Then close TestDisk.
The Mobo is an Asus M2N4-SLI and the drive is a Hitachi - I can give you the model number when I open the case (It's mounted inside, just unplugged) I'm DL'ing the PM4 as I type, so I'll get back with the results later.
A couple of things - 1} The HDD is a Maxtor DiaqmondMax-21 250Gb. 2} The 'error code at boot-up is 1234f: (I forgot the 'f' )
I DL'ed the PM4 and t'other zip, then run them as instructed but, for some reason, it didn't work. I tried burning the PM4 .ISO to a nice clean blank CD, and that doesn't work, either. I get the 1st Options menu, then any other choice loads some files, then gives a screen full of 'ID Trace' numbers, then hangs indefinitely
I went back to PM3 and went through the TestDisk again. It finds all the files and the writing MBR and Partition Table back to disk and gives the 'Reboot' to take effect - On restarting, it's forgotten everything again, as if it didn't actually write anything, after all.
I think I'll just scrap this drive - I must've spent approx 30+hours working with it, on and off - A 250Gb SATA will be a lot faster anyway.....
For some reason, PM 3 wouldn't start if I had either or both my SATA drives connected - I can't remember what happens when it starts, but it won't go into the desktop. It also won't see my NIC card, after I had the idea of copying the files to the other PC
