My motherboard has onboard sound ( see specs in profile ) and I was having a problem which I thought might be solved by adding a sound card. Whilst reading up on how to disable my onboard sound, I read somewhere that I shouldn't plug the card into the slot next to the agp as it shares something with the first pci slot ( I think ). I plugged it into the second one as instructed but still had problems. Every time I restart my computer it detects a pci modem and wants to install the drivers for it. My device manager shows the Realtek network card which I use for my connection but it also shows the pci modem. All I have plugged into the pci slots is my Ethernet card and sound card so there is no modem. I tried disabling it and uninstalling it but it just keeps coming back.

Anyone any idea how to get rid ?

I can't think of anything except that the sound card may be faulty. Does it show up in the device manager?
Or maybe the slot you're plugging it into is faulty. Have you tried plugging it in other slots? Since the slot in which your ethernet card is plugged in is working fine, try removing the ethernet card and plugging the sound card in instead.

Yes, the sound card is showing in device manager and is working fine. My problem is that Windows is detecting a PCI modem which doesn't exist. I will try plugging the sound card into a different slot though, if you think it will help.

I used to come across problems with modems regarding DMA/IRQ conflict on some older boards, I simply altered alter an IRQ channel manually in the BIOS (usually the printer) and let the bios re-arrange and reallocate the DMA/IRQ allocations, long shot but may work?

Oh well, problem solved. Except..............I'm not sure how. Went back into device manager and maybe this time uninstalled the driver instead of just the device. I'm not sure but its gone away, which is all I was really interested in.
