I tested the recovery CD again (on my desktop). This time it worked... Only thing I changed in BIOS was to enable hardware virtualization - but I doubt that would make any difference.

I don't think I've seen that option in the BIOS anywhere.
Haven't been able to run the testing tool yet, hopefully will get some time in the coming week.

Messed around with the Fujitsu tool for a while, then tried testing it with Seatools. It passed every test except S.M.A.R.T check (test isn't available). I guess is was a dodgy HDD after all
Thanks for all the help guys. Some great advice and information has been generated which should help other users in the future We can let this one rest now.
